Our Olympic Connection
As we approach the opening of the 2012 London Olympic's we had a wonderful opportunity to have a connection to the games. Maddi's great grandfather Harold Nelson was the team captain and flag bearer at the 1948 Olympic's where he competed as a long distance runner. His daughter (Maddi's Grandmother) kindly came in and gave a wonderful talk about his experience today. We learnt some great stories about the experiences of these Olympians, the last team to travel to the Olympics by boat.

100 DAYS AT SCHOOL
100 days of learning and the children in Room 3 are 100 days smarter for sure! We have had a load of fun today, well done to all the children and their families for bringing in such great collections of "100 things". Stop by and check out the display of all their creativity on our classroom walls.
We had fun making necklaces this morning using 100 fruit loops. We made them in groups of 10, this made it easier for us to count how many we had.
Our buddy class came up at morning tea. They had made some really cool maths art with the 100 theme. We shared our 100 cake with them, so yummy...bet you can guess how many lollies were on the top!!!
We did some great writing about what we might look like when we are 100. The words "wrinkled", "old" and "grey" seemed to feature in the writing!
The children loved the jellybean graphing activity. They worked in groups with a bag of 100 jellybeans.
It was fun building with the donated cans. The goal was to collect 100 cans to donate to a local food bank.
The grand finale to a fantastic 100th day of school was letting 100 helium filled balloons off. And I must say the highlight of the day for me was looking at those beautiful little faces and the pleasure on them as they watched the balloons disappear.

MEASURE IT
We started our unit on measurement today. We are going to be learning to order and compare objects by length. We will use direct comparison as well as counting whole numbers of units. Today the children all brought a favourite soft toy to school so we could make direct comparisons as well as ordering them according to length.
We found that in this grouping Trinisha had a small toy and Lachlan had a big toy.
Tui, Baily and Maddison all had soft toys that were similar sizes.
J.J's bear is bigger than Benjamin's frog.
We continued this theme this afternoon in Discovery Time. We had a key competency focus of managing our own learning. The children came up with some creative ways of comparing lengths.
