Fire Wise

To complete our People Who Help Us unit we have been learning how to be FIRE WISE.  I hope you have found the At Home section helpful as well.

Today Simon and Matt from the Tawa Volunteer Fire Service came to Room 3 and we talked some more about how to keep ourselves safe in a fire.

We all know that we need to GET DOWN, GET LOW AND GET OUT FAST.

We had a practice today at school of safely leaving the classroom and going to the safe meeting place.

Have you talked about the safe meeting place at home?
This is a great time to have this discussion.
We also talked about how the children would get out of their bedrooms if they couldn't go out the door.  Please be sure to have this discussion at home.

We have really enjoyed learning about People Who Help Us.

I love the fire truck we made for our classroom wall.

When Mel the paramedic came to school!

We had a great visit last week with Mel the paramedic.  We had prepared some great questions for him as part of our People Who Help Us topic, and we learnt lots of cool things.

This week we will continue to focus on the People Who Help Us as well as taking a closer look at the Get Firewise unit, a fire-safety education programme produced by the New Zealand Fire Service.

Well done J.J

J.J was so proud to share his karate medal with his classmates.  Well done J.J on your placement.  What did you have to do for this accomplishment?

Our Morning Question

Every morning there is a question waiting for the children in Room 3 when they arrive at school.  Well if you have ever wondered what clever things we get up to with it check this out!

This morning the question was...
Firstly we tally up each column

and then we think about the different strategies we have to help us solve this problem.

This morning Brooke used her doubles knowledge to firstly work out that 4+4=8, then she had to count  on 8 more from 8 and came up with an answer of 16.  Well done Brooke.

The next clever idea came from Lachlan who decided to count all the names.  He also got an answer of 16.  Good thinking Lachlan!

Tui had a different idea.  She knows that tidy numbers are easy to count and she decided to see if she could make 10 first out of the numbers we had.  She was also able to use her Place Value knowledge to help her work out this problem.  Guess what..... Tui got 16 as well!  Those were some tricky strategies Tui good thinking!

Ezra's idea was to count on using his fingers to help him.  He put 8 in his head and counted on to 12.  Then he put 12 in his head and counted on.  You guessed it his answer was 16!  Nice thinking Ezra!

Lastly Sophie decided to use "something" to help her count out the answers.  The something we like to use in Room 3 when we count the morning question is the ducks!  Your idea was helpful as well as cute Sophie!

And I know you know how many ducks are on that table - 16 of course!
